All over the news this week, it feels like we have seen Notre Dame in flames. It was honestly shocking to hear such news. It is wonderful to see the passion people have to rebuild such an iconic historical landmark, but at the same time, it’s not like the catholic church has any lack of funds. . . Luckily, in this day in-age, we are surrounded by technology that we didn’t have in the past in order to tremendously aid in the process of rebuilding. Let me elaborate a bit. . . We have had 3D software such as @autodesk for decades, which can digitize the structures. We also have platforms in place, such as @turbosquid3D - where the users can monetize their creations, so it’s not just a hobby for those creators. There are also companies empowered by 3D scanning, who gladly have already digitized the entire church many years ago. And, we have companies around like @massivit3d - who can add the icing on the cake. Their technology allows us to create large scale 3D printed molds, which can be used when reproducing the structure. . . I just read in the news that president, Macron, promised to get the church rebuilt in 5 years. I hope he has a team around him, who are aware of all the technologies available, which can speed up the process. I have been fortunate to find my passion at a very early age in life. The passion is a triangulation between arts, technology and business. . . For many, finding their true passion, is not easy. It seems to be a trend with a lot of calls I have been getting from college graduate students who are embarking on their journey out of school. Being in school is comfortable. You have a program, which is laid out for you and you have friends who are on that journey together with you. . . Leaving a safe environment can be daunting for many. I am here to tell you, it's okay to not know what your passion is, but it is not okay to live in fear. . . Having the courage for the next step is vital. Some of the most interesting people I know, still have no clue what it is they are meant to be doing, but their passion may be in the search itself. . . So, if I could give you 3 tips for success, it boils down to: (1) Go places (2) Meet people and (3) Do things! . . Ironically these are the 3 rules provided when you get your PADI scuba diving license. I always had the fear of breathing underwater, but pushing myself through the fear ended up with the most magical gift of seeing the wonders of the depth of the ocean. To this day, it is the most calming environment I can find on earth. . . Did you know that 3D printing has been used in the restoration of the Sagrada Familia for years? . . Yep, countless small molds have been created and they have painstakingly been put together by hand, in order to come up with something bigger. . . I am not blaming 3D printing for the 100 year delay when finishing the church, but rather empathizing with the architect, Antoni Gaudi, who created a design so ahead of its time, that it has been a true undertaking in order to make it a reality. . . The good news is that 3D printing is getting bigger, faster and more efficient by the day. And a lot of these structures can now be made far more efficiently through creating large scale molds with the help of printers like @massivit3D . . . I am excited to see what new building projects are next in line and who can adapt to this fantastic technology. Have you read the article in 3Dprint.com - “Possibilities in new design languages through 3D printing?” . . Although I agree that the Bauhaus movement, at that time, had a profound influence in art, architecture, industrial design and so forth and a lot of design classics were born during that time, we obviously didn’t have complex ways of manufacturing objects. . . Similarly, after the second world war, Alvar Aalto the guy who designed everything in my war town home country, FInland, was considered a classic design guy. His designs were great, but the reality is, anything could have become a design classic at that time, because after the war people had nothing. . . Fast forward to today, I believe there are no such thing as design classics or design movements anymore. At least not in the same way as before. Even though the 3D modeling for my design featured in this article, “Sofa So Good,” took ages and the Stereolithography print is allegedly the most time consuming SLA 3D print ever created at five weeks, my hope is that tomorrow somebody will make something a lot better and there will not be enough time for objects to grow into classics anymore. . .
